Tinder Launches Mandatory Facial Verification to Weed Out Bots and Scammers

WIRED

Face Check will scan new members' faces to ensure they don't match existing profiles. The move comes as romance scams continue to proliferate, with billions lost over the last decade. On Wednesday, Tinder announced that it was rolling out a mandatory facial verification tool for new users in the US to help combat the spread of fake profiles and weed out "bad actors." Tinder claims its mandatory facial integration feature, called Face Check, is a first for a major dating app. During the sign up process, new members complete a "liveness check" by taking a short video selfie within the app.

The rise of various social platforms has transformed journalism. The growing demand for news content has led to the increased use of large language models (LLMs) in news production due to their speed and cost-effectiveness. However, LLMs still encounter limitations in professionalism and ethical judgment in news generation. Additionally, predicting public feedback is usually difficult before news is released. To tackle these challenges, we introduce AI-Press, an automated news drafting and polishing system based on multi-agent collaboration and Retrieval-Augmented Generation. We develop a feedback simulation system that generates public feedback considering demographic distributions. Through extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations, our system shows significant improvements in news-generating capabilities and verifies the effectiveness of public feedback simulation.

Bipartisan Senate bill would kill the TSA's 'Big Brother' airport facial recognition

Engadget

US Senators John Kennedy (R-LA) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) introduced a bipartisan bill Wednesday to end involuntary facial recognition screening at airports. The Traveler Privacy Protection Act would block the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from continuing or expanding its facial recognition tech program. It would also require the government agency to explicitly receive congressional permission to renew it, and it would have to dispose of all biometric data within three months. Senator Merkley described the TSA's biometric collection practices as the first steps toward an Orwellian nightmare. "The TSA program is a precursor to a full-blown national surveillance state," Merkley wrote in a news release.

Towards systematic intraday news screening: a liquidity-focused approach

Zhang, Jianfei, Rosenbaum, Mathieu

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

News can convey bearish or bullish views on financial assets. Institutional investors need to evaluate automatically the implied news sentiment based on textual data. Given the huge amount of news articles published each day, most of which are neutral, we present a systematic news screening method to identify the ``true'' impactful ones, aiming for more effective development of news sentiment learning methods. Based on several liquidity-driven variables, including volatility, turnover, bid-ask spread, and book size, we associate each 5-min time bin to one of two specific liquidity modes. One represents the ``calm'' state at which the market stays for most of the time and the other, featured with relatively higher levels of volatility and trading volume, describes the regime driven by some exogenous events. Then we focus on the moments where the liquidity mode switches from the former to the latter and consider the news articles published nearby impactful. We apply naive Bayes on these filtered samples for news sentiment classification as an illustrative example. We show that the screened dataset leads to more effective feature capturing and thus superior performance on short-term asset return prediction compared to the original dataset.

From silicon to brain cells: How biology may hold the future of computers

#artificialintelligence

As artificial intelligence software and advanced computers revolutionize modern technology, some researchers see a future where computer programmers leap from silicon to organic molecules. Scientists with Johns Hopkins University are investigating the possibility of "biocomputers" – programs modelled from organic molecules such as human DNA or proteins – unlocking new insights on human biology and advancing the processing power of future tech. Much of these technological anticipations derive from something called "organoids," which are lab-grown tissues resembling fully grown organs, sharing similar biological complexities to tissues comprised in kidneys, lungs and brain cells. Organoids, which have become more prominent in labs over the last two decades, currently offer scientists a more ethical alternative to animal or human testing, mimicking basic functions of cells and advancing scientific understandings towards how those cells operate. Most recently, scientists with Johns Hopkins have been assessing the nature of "brain organoids," which are orbs the size of a pen dot that mirror the basic neural functions of learning and remembering in the human brain, according to a news release.

Artificial Intelligence Technology Solutions (AITX) Fundraising Update

#artificialintelligence

Detroit, Michigan, Nov. 02, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Artificial Intelligence Technology Solutions, Inc., (the Company) (OTCPK:AITX), has announced that on October 28, 2022 it issued a $4 million note to its largest single investor thereby securing a loan that matures in 4 years, bears interest at 15% per annum, has an original issue discount of $500,000, provides cash proceeds to the Company of $3.5 million, and includes warrants to acquire additional preferred equity shares (the "Fundraise"). The net effect of the Fundraise does not materially affect the Company's common stock shareholders or common shareholders' equity percentage since Steve Reinharz, AITX Founder and CEO, has effectively reduced his stake by approximately 20% (from fully diluted ownership of 65% to 54%) to achieve the funding without any further dilution to common shareholders. Steve Reinharz commented, "My commitment has always been to make AITX along with its RAD subsidiaries the dominant player in the evolving #proptech industry, which we feel we helped write the book on. This funding is crucial to the Company and will allow us to continue to grow while adding potential value to all stakeholders." Reinharz continued, "Certainly, I don't love reducing my overall stake, but the way this deal issues preferred shares and doesn't affect common shareholders, is a significant demonstration of my commitment to the Company's mission and to our shareholders."
